Joe lived in his truck for four years. He scraped together food whenever he could, but his life was far from consistent when it came to nutrition. In his words, Joe felt himself slipping further and further into a ‘primitive’ state.

With help from people like you, when a senior needs a helping hand and warm meal, we are here to help.

Your generosity allows Joe to enter the Mamie George Community Center (MGCC) in Richmond without worrying about how he’ll be treated.

At the center, Patty’s Café serves a hot meal to seniors each weekday. It’s a place of community, socialization, and nutrition for low-income seniors like Joe. Case management, games, art activities, and a fitness center all make for a safe space for seniors to gather.

“I felt like I came home or something,” Joe said about his first day at MGCC. “Everybody was so nice; everybody was so approachable.”

While at MGCC, Joe also received help to get him out of his truck and into a home. He still goes to the center, and hopes others in tough situations will go, too.

“When I walked through that door at Catholic Charities, it changed my life,” Joe said. “You come here, you can eat and you meet good people who are honestly trying to help you.”
