Last month, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston broke ground on a new promise to Houston families: a place where neighbors in need can find practical support and renewed hope, all under one roof.
On Monday, Sept. 21, our community gathered to celebrate the start of construction on the Family Opportunity Center, a 60,000-square-foot facility we believe will transform the lives of our neighWhy the Family Opportunity Center and Why Now? bors in need. It will bring together a market-style pantry, a thrift store, counseling, employment support, rental assistance, and more in one place.
Why the Family Opportunity Center and Why Now?
The statistics are grim. Nearly two in five Houston and Harris County households report difficulty consistently accessing nutritious food, and the share rises to one in two among households with children. A recent Point-in-Time count identified more than 3,300 people across Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties who were living in shelters or without shelter on a single night. According to the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County, more than 7,100 people entered homelessness for the first time during the 2025 federal fiscal year.
For years, the Guadalupe Center has answered the call for Houstonians in their hardest moments. Our doors have always been open, but demand has outgrown our space. We can no longer keep up with the growing number of individuals and families who turn to us for help.
That is why we launched our “Building to Serve” capital campaign: to expand our services and serve more families in one warm, welcoming place.
More Than a Building
The Family Opportunity Center will be more than four walls and a roof. It is where mercy meets opportunity, a place where individuals and families can find resources to help them regain their footing during uncertain times.
We are designing every corner of the Family Opportunity Center with clients’ dignity in mind. Whether clients choose groceries for their families at the market-style pantry, meet with a licensed mental health counselor, find parenting resources and education, or prepare for a job interview, every space will reflect our mission: providing caring, compassionate services and advocating for social justice.
Because we are no strangers to hurricanes, tropical storms, and ice storms, the state-of-the-art facility will serve as a disaster-response hub, with backup generators to keep services running during power outages and expanded warehouse space for food
storage. We have been there during trying times before, and the Family Opportunity Center will only strengthen our presence.
Creating a Lasting Impact
Hunger and homelessness in Houston can’t wait. We must continue solving these challenges collectively to make a lasting impact. The Family Opportunity Center will not be a “cure-all,” but it will offer hope to a segment of our community that struggles day in and day out to support themselves and their families and to find purpose.
We look forward to opening the doors of the Family Opportunity Center at 9111 Jensen Drive in 2028. In the meantime, we invite you to learn more about our Building to Serve campaign, share this story with others, and join us in creating a place where Houston families can find help, dignity, and hope under one roof.
