HOUSTON – Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a volunteer organization dedicated to building and delivering beds to children and families in need, assembled and donated 200 beds for children of Afghan evacuee families served by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The effort is in partnership with the Houston Furniture Bank and its “No Kids on the Floor” program.

“Sleep in Heavenly Peace and their Disaster Relief Program is working with Catholic Charities as they sponsor over a thousand Afghan family evacuees who served beside American troops are now fleeing from danger in their home country,” said Tim Zydek, SHP director of disaster relief. “At SHP, we fully believe that a bed is a basic need for proper physical, emotional and mental support that a child needs.”

“Catholic Charities is grateful to Sleep in Heavenly Peace for helping the children of Afghan families who are building a new life in our community,” said Catholic Charities CEO Cynthia N. Colbert, MSW. “Many of these children have experienced trauma while escaping from their home country.  A new bed of their own can provide a safe space for a peaceful night’s rest.”

“The Houston Furniture Bank is honored to partner with Sleep in Heavenly Peace and Catholic Charities to give Afghan evacuee children a greater sense of security in their new homes,” said Oli Mohammed, executive director. “We work with Sleep in Heavenly Peace on an ongoing basis to provide quality mattresses through our No Kids on the Floor campaign.”

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is made up of almost 300 chapters of volunteers across the U.S. and beyond. Volunteers gather to assemble beds using a standard design template, then ensure the beds and bedding are provided to children who otherwise could be sleeping on the floor or a couch.

“This project is being funded through the SHP Disaster Relief Program and we are still trying to meet our goal of $50,000 for lumber, mattresses and bedding to provide the 200 beds…completely separate from the normal chapter bed building/delivery process,” said Zydek.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapters from the Houston area, Montgomery County and Beaumont, and the Houston Furniture Bank are participating in the project benefitting Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement program.
