After a year without a steady paycheck, Tenia struggled to catch up on her past-due bills. But with your help, Catholic Charities was there to help her meet her financial goals.
Tenia was finally employed again. She secured a well-paying, stable job and was excited to be working again.
But after a year without a steady paycheck, Tenia struggled to catch up on her past-due bills. She began making payments as best she could, but because of her higher level of income, the Galveston Housing Authority notified her that her rent was increasing substantially.
Since her car was nearly paid off, she funneled her first few paychecks toward her past-due car payments. She was afraid of repossession and not having reliable transportation to her job, but this caused her to struggle to pay her other bills.
Because of your support, Tenia found the help she needed to become more financially stable through Catholic Charities’ Women Veteran Services program. She received rental assistance while she paid down her multiple payday loans, past-due utility bill and other expenses. In addition, she attended peer-to-peer group meetings that helped her share experiences and relate to other female veterans.
Tenia was able to work toward paying down her debts, but she had little left over for other necessities. She slept on an air mattress for several months due to a bed bug infestation in her apartment. Her case manager was able to negotiate a lower rate for a new mattress, and Star Furniture waived the delivery charges too. Thanks to you, Tenia also received new linen, bedding and pillows to help her get a good night’s rest.
Tenia doesn’t have to worry anymore since she paid off her car and has the extra money to contribute to her living expenses and build her savings. Thank you for helping Tenia get back on her feet!
