Join Catholic Charities to explore how faith communities help individuals and families move from poverty to greater economic sustainability.

Living in poverty can be traumatic. Facing a daily deficiency in the most basic resources required for life often produces stress, conflict, and depleted emotional resilience. Catholic Charities’ 2022 kNOw Poverty Summit will focus on the intersection of trauma and poverty, exploring the challenges of poverty that translate into traumatic experience.
Break-out sessions will look at strategies for helping clients in crisis from a faith-based perspective; the benefits of self-care for social service practitioners; the importance of applying concepts related to trauma in social service settings; and how poverty can have impact on physical and emotional health.

Dr. Matthew Desmond
Dr. Matthew Desmond is the Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology at Princeton University, and author of the book “Evicted.” Desmond is the principal investigator of The Eviction Lab, a team of researchers, students, and others who believe that a stable, affordable home is central to human flourishing and economic mobility.
Rev. Vicente Agila
Pastor, Our Lady of Fátima Parish and School, Galena Park, TX
Fr. Agila is the pastor at Our Lady of Fátima Parish and School in Galena Park, Texas. He has been a priest for 27 years and has a background in clinical psychology. He is the advisor to the Christian Family Movement and instructor in the Formation Program for Christian Ministry for the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston. He serves as an advisor of small Catholic Christian communities, the spiritual director and advisor of the “God Family and Service” retreats, and the International Just Cause Foundation in Houston.
Cynthia N. Colbert, MSW
President and CEO, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston
An expert on poverty and ways to address it, Cynthia N. Colbert, MSW, took the helm of Catholic Charities in 2012 and since then created new partnerships across the region to help impoverished individuals build better lives. With more than 20 years in the not for profit sector, she is an experienced leader in nonprofit management.
Denise Murray, RN, BSN, NC-BC
Denise is a seasoned former RN Disease and Injury Case Manager who now serves as a holistic health and fitness coaching professional. She also has years of professional and personal experience serving in faith-based non-profits, including in the heart of Los Angeles’ Skid Row. She was born into circumstances that made her an “Adult Child” who had to learn & experience what it means to “First Heal Thyself.” As a result, she is now a Board Certified Nurse Coach. Through her private practice, she helps other personal and professional caregivers explore the nuts and bolts of transformation from the inside out helping them move from stuck and striving to freedom and thriving.
Fr. Ragan Schriver, PsyD, LAPSW
Catholic Charities USA
Fr. Schriver is the Special Assistant to the President of Catholic Charities USA and an Associate Professor in the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he teaches courses in clinical and organizational leadership and trauma responsive care. He has been with Catholic Charities for over 20 years, many of those years spent as the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of East Tennessee. He works with the Healthy Housing Initiative team at CCUSA to develop permanent supportive housing projects with a housing first approach.
Natalie Wood, Senior Vice Presidents of Programs
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston
Wood is responsible for the majority of social services provided to the community through Catholic Charities, ranging from food pantries to housing assistance to refugee resettlement. Each year on average, her programs serve more than 100,000 people through locations in Fort Bend, Galveston and Harris counties.
Sharon Zachary, CEO
Alliance of Community Assistance Ministries
Since 2009, Zachary helped the ACAM Network expand nonprofit organizational development by leading six initiatives with more than 500 projects in areas such as food security, organizational development, homelessness prevention, and health access. She holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology and is experienced in strategic planning, program development and evaluation, nonprofit management, and developing public-private partnerships. She views nonprofit organizational development as key to growth and sustainability and as an essential component of grantmaking to ensure investments create lasting impact. She has served a diverse group of organizations, including both government and nonprofit and both direct service and intermediary.
